Chapter Four

Ezra the Brick Monster was bored. Not with life, because that was pretty good, but bored with what he was doing on a daily basis. It was the routine, really.

The problem was, he had an inbuilt alarm clock. He had been out swimming one day, and when eating some tasty perch, or maybe it was tench, he really didn’t know, had also by mistake swallowed a digital alarm clock. It had one of those motion sensors that meant that its power never ran out, and the alarm was set to go off at six every morning. That’s six wherever he was in the world, so if he was at home with his parents, which was very unlikely, as he hadn’t been back there since leaving, but just supposing he might, then when he was there, and they were all asleep at one in the morning, his alarm would go off. And if he was, say, in another part of the world, like China for example, even though he had never been there, but just supposing, then he would wake up and everyone else would have been up all day.

So, whatever he was doing, he would wake up at six in the morning, even if it was a weekend, or a public holiday, he was cursed.

When he had first consumed the alarm clock, he had tried to ignore it and return to sleep, but the very process of him swallowing had put the alarm on pause, and it would pause for six times every sequence before turning itself off, ready to go off again tomorrow morning. And every morning. So Ezra wasn’t just bored, but he was also tired, and every morning he followed the same routine.

There was a supply of fresh rainwater at the back of his cave, which came from a little stream that came through the cracks, so his bed was not too far away from there, but close enough so he could take a drink if he became thirsty during the night. The water gathered in a little pool, and then overflowed into a small stream that eventually took over the bigger half of his cave, so he could swim in and out underwater. There was a small shelf where the water came in, and that was where he kept his toothbrush. It was not really a toothbrush, as it had originally been a toilet brush, but he was unaware of that, just pleased that it kept his teeth clean. He had managed to jam the toilet brush into a crevice in the wall, and so he would put his head into the pool, and then when his mouth was full of water he would run the inside of his mouth around the brush. Then he would spit out into the pool.

Ezra was a very special monster, because he had unusual powers. He could transport himself. He would think very hard, crease his brow, and concentrate so hard that all of a sudden he was somewhere else that he wanted to be.
